Listen ...

The seat was almost damp and there was a small flickering bulb hanging overhead. The gentleman took the seat next to the window. He put his belongings below the seat and looked around. There was only another aged person who was seated diagonally opposite to him in this part of the compartment. He smiled at him and then turned away. The weather was cold and was harsh enough to freeze a tear.

His clothes couldn't keep his body warm. They weren't enough. He shivered. He had no idea where he was or what he was doing there. His mind was blank. The people loved him for he had the charm and the grace of a prince. But he had no friends no family. He was all alone. The world around him had suddenly been cruel, and dangerous. He had escaped from all. He closed his eyes and laid back, still shivering.

The sound of footsteps woke him up. As the footsteps neared, out of the darkness a lady came into the compartment. Finding the seat in front of him empty, sat down next to the window opposite to him. He watched her as she kept her bag below her seat. The train started moving as another gentleman came and sat next to her. He held two cups of the steaming liquid. As they drank he noticed that she was the most loveliest being he had ever seen. As her eyes met his, he felt the warmth and some kind of heavenly feeling. Those eyes, he couldn't let go of them for such a pair of wonder , he had never seen. She smiled and turned away. He realized that his shivering had intensified and he knew it wasn't the cold now.

He could hear the man next to her go on whispering something . But all he saw was that she looked more and more beautiful with every passing moment. But he couldn't tell her that. He couldn't express how he felt . How she had made him feel. He wanted to tell her .speak to her. but he couldn't . for he was born dumb. Still shivering he curled on tight and tried to sleep.

He woke when he felt something warm. The lady had put a blanket over him. She smiled at him when he saw her. The man next to her was snoring away. They stared at each other for a long time . He felt her eyes piercing into the darkness. There was some kind of a lonely feeling in those eyes. He could feel there was a fire in her. The face , those eyes . She looked at him as though she too wanted to say something. She didn't. He could read her face. It was a face which had many unanswered questions . But undeniably he felt that there also were answers to his questions . His questions about life. How he wished he could stare into that face and get all those answers . Speak to it and know more . He couldn't.

Neither of them spoke. Not a word. But their eyes didn't leave the other. It appeared as though feelings were conveyed, answers obtained .

The destination neared. The man next to her got up . He started collecting both their belongings. A sad look encroached her face. He could see a drop of sparkling tear in each eyes. She knew she would be taken away and he knew he could do nothing about it . It pained him . Never had his heart ached like now. He no longer shivered. The single spark now had become a stream. She held out a hand . He touched it and saw her face .The face now had only one question written all over. "WHY ?"  He couldn't answer . He saw her leave unwillingly. He felt as though a part of him being taken away . He didn't speak. The sunshine which had taken his shiver away, the face on which he had found answers, the eyes which held him tight , were taken away. If only he could speak .

a year has passed since she was taken .

if I could speak.
